There are many ways that you can be involved as a volunteer with our rescue, including but not limited to:

- Fundraising Events (Bingos, BBQs, Gala, Partner Events, Photoshoots, etc)

- Adoption Events

- Bartending / Ticket Selling for Events

- Recycling Pickups & Drop Offs

- Supply/Donation Transport

- Foster Dog Transport (to Events or Vet Appointments)

- Foster Dog Sitting

- Foster Dog Walking

- Photography

- Medical/Grooming Support for Foster Homes (experience preferred)

All dog sitting opportunities from foster homes will be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator of Dog Management, and then posted to our internal lines of communication with information about the dog, the timeframe in which dog sitting is needed, and any special notes about the dog's care. If interested, you may voice your willingness to dog sit in the respective call outs. Dog sitting takes place in your home, as a volunteer, and you must be an approved dog sitter prior to being eligible to dog sit.

You need to be at least 16 years old to apply as a volunteer on your own, or can apply with a guardian if under this age. Some volunteering opportunities may be limited to those over 19 years of age (ie. Bartending Events, Dog Sitting, Dog Transport).

There is no set recurring amount of hours that you need to volunteer with Saskatoon Dog Rescue to become a volunteer! We do expect you to volunteer at least once per year to remain active with our rescue, but otherwise, how much you want to volunteer is up to you!

Depending on the event, volunteering tasks at events can vary. For all events, general knowledge about our rescue is encouraged so that you can educate external stakeholders about who Saskatoon Dog Rescue is and how we serve our local community. For fundraising events, tasks can include cash-handling, food prep, merch selling, etc. For events that include our foster dogs being present, tasks can include dog transport and/or being a dog companion for the duration of the event.

Yes, absolutely! We are always welcoming volunteers from outside of Saskatoon, as long as you are able to drive into Saskatoon for a majority of our events/opportunities. Restrictions may apply for dog sitting/foster temping (generally limited to those living within a 60km radius of Saskatoon) but can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Yes! During the dog sitting approval process, we will need proof that your animals are all UTD (up-to-date) on vaccinations and are spayed/neutered if over 6 months of age. Our foster dogs may not be UTD yet while in your care. Dogs that are not UTD on vaccines cannot attend dog parks and/or certain SDR events (leash walks at this time are acceptable).

No. The volunteer dog sitter will need to look after the foster dog in their own home.

Of course, as long as the event you are looking to volunteer for is kid-friendly! Some volunteer opportunities aren’t suited well for little hands, but there is no harm in asking!
